On your next visit to Bangkok, Thailand, do not miss the opportunity to visit the Old Capital at Ayutthaya. Reminiscent of the temples of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Ayutthaya provides tourists with a different perspective of Thailand and is guaranteed to be a memorable day trip away from the hustle and bustle of lively Bangkok.

Only a mere 45 minutes away from Bangkok, Ayutthaya is easily accessible via bus, train, or mini van. The best option of these is the mini van as it offers a ride that is faster and more comfortable than the two other options. Mini vans to Ayutthaya are available at the Victory Monument BTS station. Upon arriving in Ayutthaya, tuk-tuks are available to take you around. Tuk-tuks can be hired at a rate of 200 THB per person for the whole day.

Day Trip In Thailand

Assuming that one only has around 5 hours in the Old Capital, these are the must-sees and dos in Ayutthaya:

A Day Trip to Ayutthaya From Bangkok

1) Wat Phanan Choeng

This giant golden Buddha, measuring 90 meters in height and 20.17 in width, was built even before the Ayutthaya kingdom was established. It was initially built in the middle of a large open space where the magnificent golden statue could be seen from all directions in Ayutthaya. Today, a building has been constructed to protect the Buddha from natural elements.

2) The Royal Elephant Kraal

The elephant is the national symbol of Thailand and is used in many of their royal processions and celebrations. Get the chance to ride an elephant around several of the temples in Ayutthaya. A rate of 200 THB per person for 10 minutes is charged.

3) Lunch by the river

There are several restaurants along the river. After spending the morning exploring the various temples of Ayutthaya, reward yourself with a Thai beer and a sumptuous lunch at one of these restaurants.

4) Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon

Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon is one of Ayutthaya’s more beautiful wats. Set in a fairly large complex, a large reclining Buddha is also one of the attractions in the area. The wat’s giant chedi, which is the highlight of the complex, is said to be the highest point in Ayutthaya.

5) Wat Mahathat

This wat is famous for the Buddha head that could be found among the roots of one of the trees in the complex. Though there is not much to be seen in the complex besides this, this wat is still worth the trip for day visitors in Ayutthaya.

There are lots of other attractions in Ayutthaya that would suit your preferences. Whichever activity you choose, Ayutthaya is guaranteed to be a memorable experience.

The Field Trip: It’s a new term and a geography field trip looms. A new girl, Lauren, has joined the school, and Will has taken a particular shine to her. There’s only one problem – she has her eye on Simon. No fish were inhumanely treated during the filming of the episode! Puerile adult humour.
