Bear watching in Ruka, Lapland takes place in the east of Kuusamo next to the Russian border, just 30 minuscule drive from the center of Kuusamo. This is the northern most area for bear watching in Finland and as such the only place with 24 hour daylight straight through the summer to inspect them all night without need for specialist equipment.

The Ruka bear watching trips regularly start at around 6pm and will whether last for a few hours or straight through the night until the morning. The bear watching takes place in a hide, a solid structure over seeing a bear feeding area and is done in the knowledgeable pressence of a guide.

Ruka Bear Watching Season

The Ruka bear watching season is from the beginning of May to August 19th. The bear watching enterprise Karhu-Kuusamo reported a 99% occasion of sighting bears whilst out on a trip with them while the 2009 season.

Generally bears come to this feeding area, which the hides over look, for the first 10 days of May, and then for the rest of May they will come but it is great to book a whole night trip rather than an evening one to have a great occasion of seeing them.

From the end of May until end of June is mating time, and it is very unpredictable. Perhaps good, Perhaps very silent in this area. For these times it is great to palpate the guiding enterprise and ask what the situation is, as it is impossible to predict.

High season is from the beginning of July to August 19th and at this time you have a 99% occasion to seeing bears whilst in the hide.

The season ends on August 19th as that is when the hunting season begins and the bears come to be very afraid of population and retreat to Russia.

How Many Bears Will You See?

From late May to the middle of July these bears come to feed alone, regularly feed for 10 to fifteen minutes and then leave, the next one coming some time later. By the middle of July it wouldn’t be unusual to see 2 or 3 at the same time and in August it has been known for 5 or more to come to the feeding area at the same time.

The guides speak excellent English and are very informed about the area and the bears.

The Bears And Their Habits

The bears in Finland are brown bears and are very shy and afraid of people, hence the guess you need to watch them in a hide. They spend their time bright between Finland and Russia, staying in Russia while the day as the nearest house is over 60kms away and then coming into Finland while the night when the humans are sleeping.

They can weigh up to 300kgs and are tree climbing bears.
