Sussex has a long history and tradition of beer making as many of the UK’s hop producing farms can be found in parts of Sussex and the neighbouring county of Kent. This gives a typical and traditional feel to the ales and beers produced in this area, over many of the larger multinational breweries that buy in a lot of their hops from outside the UK.
A must stop for visiting traditional English beer and ale enthusiasts is the Harvey’s brewery in Lewes. The brewery was built in 1838 and is still situated in the original Grade II listed building within the centre of the town. There is a shop where you can purchase a range of selected bottled ales and beers. Two of the most notable beers worth considering for season drinking or gifts are the Harvey’s Old Ale, voted the World’s Best Standard Dark Beer in the 2009 at the World Beer Awards, or the Harvey’s Christmas Ale, a strong ‘hoppy’ ale, which despite its name can be enjoyed any time of the year.
Just outside the historical town of Lewes is the 1648 Brewing Company, near East Hoathly. The 1648 Brewing Company are a micro-brewery and one of the up and coming stars for locally brewed beers and ales, winning many locals awards. Beers to look out for are their 1648 Ruby Mild or (EHM – East Hoathly Mild) and the 1648 Triple Champion, a beer with great depth and colour which was brewed to mark the third County Championship win for Sussex County Cricket Club.
Lastly is another micro-brewery which is well worth considering, is the Fallen Angel Micro-brewery outside of East Hoathly. Two of their season beer’s to look out for are the ‘Fire in the Hole Chili Beer’ and the hugely popular Winter Ale the ‘Two Seasons Treat’.
